The National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is an interdisciplinary public research organisation under the administrative supervision of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Its main goals are (1) to conduct scientific research, (2) to transfer research results, (3) to share knowledge, (4) to train through research, and (5) to contribute to scientific policy.

Research expertise

Its research fields include biology, chemistry, ecology and the environment, humanities and social sciences, engineering and systems, mathematics, nuclear and particles, physics, information sciences, earth sciences and astronomy.

The CNRS establishes scientific partnerships with industrial actors in order to explore possible applications for its discoveries and to develop technologies. The transfer of its basic research results drives innovation based on a scientific foundation of the highest quality.

Role in PHIDIAS

The CNRS - representing IRST (Infrastructure de recherche "Pôle de données du Système Terre") - will be in charge of the technical coordination of the three use cases to ensure that the work done is compatible with the global Earth System (i.e. Common System composed of the Common Metadata Repository and the End-Users Common Interactive Processing Service). A Common Interface document applicable to these activities will be created for smooth integration in the Common System. IRST will also prepare the Data Management Plan for the PHIDIAS Action.

Joël Sudre (M) is currently a French National Centre for Scientific (CNRS) Research Engineer at UMS 2013 CPST (Mixed Service Unit to support Data Terra French Research Infrastructure). He received his Ph.D. degree in physical oceanography from Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France, in 2013. He has authored and co-authored 46 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (http://www.researcherid.com/rid/G-9220-2018). His research interests include physical, dynamical, and biogeochemical oceanography, image processing for oceanographic studies, and in situ and satellite ocean observing systems. He is a technical representative of French Ocean Data Information and Service (ODATIS) and he is the technical coordinator of UMS2013 CPST.

Frédéric Huynh (M) is director of the Earth system Research Infrastructure since 2017. He was IRD Director for Brazil (2012-2016), director of UMR ESPACE-DEV (2001-2012) and co-director of the Remote Sensing Centre (Maison de la Télédétection) in Montpellier. He is an expert of Earth observation and integrated/multidisciplinary approaches to the environment and sustainable development, environmental information and decision support system, interoperability between spatial data and in-situ data and services for earth observation and science. He has published more than 100 scientific references and coordinated more than 50 European and international projects in these fields.
